Incentives for Starting a Business

104 10

    Creative Autonomy

    • If you have dreams and ideas about a product or service that you can uniquely create or provide, this is a strong incentive to start your own business. Many entrepreneurs start their businesses because they have a special skill, such as designing buildings or healing with massage. By becoming your own boss, you allow yourself creative autonomy to develop and market this skill as your own unique offering, attracting customers who are most appropriate for your work and your temperament, tailoring your products and services to meet their needs as well as your own.

    Personal Autonomy

    • Owning your own business enables you to make choices from a personal standpoint when necessary. If you are working for someone else's company and you have a client who irritates you so profoundly that it affects your personal life, you will often have no choice other than to stifle your feelings and do the best job you can. If you own your own business and are confronted with a difficult client, you can make your own decision about whether or not it is worth your while to keep working with him.

    Financial Autonomy

    • Owning your own business provides you with financial autonomy, or decision-making power about which endeavors are worth the money and which are not. If you feel that you are working too hard and your workload is affecting your personal life, as a self-employed entrepreneur, you have the freedom to evaluate for yourself whether the additional money you earn working the extra hours is worth the toll it takes on your health and your relationships.

    Schedule Autonomy

    • Owning your own business gives you the freedom to create a schedule that is adapted to your circumstances and your temperament. If you are not a morning person, you have the autonomy to avoid appointments and work hours early in the mornings. If you have small children, you can plan a business that allows you the time and flexibility to attend to their needs. If you love to ski, you can create an endeavor that allows you to work in the summers and spend your winters on the slopes.
