Introduction to EazyDraw

106 19
EazyDraw is a vector line drawing application available for Apple Mac users running OS X 10.4 and later on Intel and Power PC machines. There are quite a few vector line drawing apps available for OS X, though they are generally less popular than pixel based image editors which can be used to edit digital photos.

Vector line graphics do have an advantage over graphics produced in pixel based image editors as they can be resized to any size without any loss of image quality.

This can be essential for graphics such as company logos and because of this, a vector line drawing application should be a part of every designer's tool box.

The best known vector line drawing app for OS X is Adobe Illustrator, which is a professional tool that has become the industry standard application in this field. However for less demanding users, there are many other options that may be more suitable.

EazyDraw is one such option and with a price for the download version at less than one sixth of the cost of Illustrator, many users might want to consider it.

This overview should give you a better insight into EazyDraw and help you to decide if it might be a suitable choice for you.

Highlights of EazyDraw

There are plenty of features that may make EazyDraw an attractive choice, including:
  • Native OS X application
  • Clear and friendly user interface
  • Layer support with opacity and color tint controls
  • Good selection of drawing tools
  • Specialist graphics palettes, such as for charts and technical drawings

  • Save and export in a number of vector and raster file formats
  • Comprehensive documentation in the application and to download
  • Reasonable purchase price, with trial option

Why Use EazyDraw?

If you're looking for a vector line drawing application, it would certainly be worth taking a look at a trial version of EazyDraw to see if it would fit in with your requirements. It doesn't have the full feature set of Adobe Illustrator, but its cost is considerably lower and it does offer tools that can make some tasks easier than the Adobe app.

For example, there are several built-in libraries of graphics specifically designed to make it easier to produce more specialized documents, including charts, technical drawings and maths documents. Users who need to produce such documents could find these features really speed up work flow.

Beyond these more specialized features, EazyDraw offers most of the drawing tools you would expect to find in a vector line application. You have options for drawing rectangles, ellipses, arcs, stars and other shapes. There are also several line drawing tools, including bezier line tools for producing more complex shapes. Controls for applying colors and gradients to objects are quite comprehensive and you can even flow text within shapes.

Limitations of EazyDraw

If you're looking for an Illustrator replacement, then you may be disappointed with the features of EazyDraw. Certainly the lack of options for changing the appearance of strokes and outlines, other than making the lines dashed, can make it difficult at least to replicate some of the creative effects that the Adobe app can produce. Advanced tools, like the Gradient Mesh and Apply Envelope are also not replicated, though these may be missed by fewer users.

While the layers palette does make it easier to manage more complex documents, it would be nice to have the option of blending modes as these can be used to create some quite advanced and creative effects. There is at least an opacity control and the option to apply a color tint to a layer does at least open up some other creative possibilities.

Help and Support

EazyDraw's user interface includes a Help menu with a few options for users. However the first entry to EazyDraw Help opens an extremely comprehensive manual detailing all the features of the application. Clicking the link to Online Manual will take you to a web page to download a PDF manual that is also available for purchase in print form. If you still need assistance, the Support pages of the website invite users to email for support. There is also a dedicated forum that can be accessed from the website for discussion about EazyDraw with other users.

You can download and purchase a copy of EazyDraw from the EazyDraw website.
