The Difference Between Then and Now - How Virtual Ordering Changes Everything

101 24
When I get hungry, I get really, really hungry. Some people (we won't mention any names) have even told me I get a bit moody when I get hungry. In reality that may be a slight understatement. The truth is I get pretty crabby when hunger sets in, and, for the sake of empathy, probably a bit unpleasant to be around. Once I get some food back in to my system, however, I'm back to my normal self. No, I'm not hypoglycemic, I just get crabby when I get hungry. (can you tell I'm hungry right now?)

Thankfully, we now live in a world where it is becoming increasingly easier to access and order the food we love. Which is good for me because, for the last few years, I've been ordering a heck of a lot of takeout and delivery. The truth is, I've always enjoyed eating out. It's nostalgic to me - not to mention awesome - and since I'm always so busy writing amazing blog articles, I've found it much easier to order in than to hit the kitchen. Since I consider myself a foodie - that is, a person whom thoroughly enjoys food, and eats a wide variety of new things each week - I've taken comfort in knowing that I can now order anything I want with a few swipes and clicks.

I'm sure everyone can relate to this, am I right? First, we whip out our smart phones or laptops. Then we do a quick Google search for whatever it is we might be craving. If we're not sure what we want, that's no problem, a general "restaurants near me" search will do just fine. Then, suddenly, dozens of results present themselves in an easy-to-read fashion as if they knew exactly what we were looking for. (Oh wait, they did.) All of a sudden, we're now able to compare menus and prices, read reviews and ratings, and, of course, order something scrumptious, that is, when we finally decide what it is we want to eat. That's something that just wasn't possible five years ago.

I remember when I was growing up: This process was so much more complicated. First, we'd have to decide what we wanted to eat. Agreeing on a place was always the hardest part. Google was certainly available five years ago, but since many restaurants didn't have a website, or at least didn't have an online menu, it made this process so much more tedious.

Once we decided where we wanted to order from, we'd have to scrounge through a foot-high stack of paper menus to find the one to the restaurant we wanted to order from. (Anyone else remember that awesomeness?) At last, we'd all finally get to choose our dish, individually, from the paper menu, from the restaurant we agreed on, and then would call the closest location to place our order. Whew, I'm tired just describing that process.

Oh, how times have changed. Nowadays, all we've got to do is look up some choices online. Click a few links, swipe a few screens, and voila! Virtual magic has suddenly made it possible to get food delivered right to our doorsteps without so much as lifting a finger - or, perhaps more importantly, without having to talk to a single person.

Online ordering system for restaurants has made our lives easier. Now that a majority of restaurants have adopted said technology, we can eat in peace if that's what we so choose. I realize that not every restaurant has adopted this sort of technology quite yet, but believe me when I tell you, it's just a matter of time. Restaurants are either going to adopt this sort of enhanced user experience, or will most likely fail miserably.

So say goodbye paper menus, and hello to virtual, online ordering. As I sit here, writing this blog, I've already ordered some Kung Pao Chicken and Lo Mein noodles. Yeah, no big deal.
