Bacterial vaginosis causes several other forms of bacteria to breed inside the vagina.
This bacterial growth is the cause of smell in the vaginal discharge.

This change of name was made to indicate that a woman affected by bacterial vaginosis can have several types of bacteria in her vagina that grow to their optimum size.

The reasons for bacterial vaginosis can be due to excessive use of vaginal spray, or it can be due to Lactobacilli inside the vagina reduces which are responsible for producing hydrogen peroxide inside, or it can be for the reason that Anaerobic bacteria growing and swelling inside the vagina.
Sexual intercourse with multiple partners can also be a valid reason and smoking too can contribute.
The medicines that are used are safe and do not have any undesirable effects.
On the other hand as a side effect there might be yeast infection due to use of cream or antibiotics.
When undergoing treatment with antibiotic it should be ensured that a full treatment cycle is completed to get rid of bacteria vaginosis, otherwise there is chance of the bacteria reappearing.
Bacterial vaginosis can be treated either by Antibiotics in which Metroniadazole is one antibiotic that can be used which is available in both gel and pill form, or by vaginal cream that can be applied to eliminate the smell.
