Diabetes can be caused by a number of factors, which can include genetics, a poor diet, obesity, lack of exercise and certain illnesses such as pancreatitis.
Unfortunately, there are many individuals who suffer with the condition, but who do not even know that they have diabetes.
Those who do not know that they have the condition, may not realize that their health could be in considerable jeopardy, so it is very important to know the symptoms so that you can seek medical attention from your doctor or GP as quickly as possible.
Symptoms of type 1 diabetes (insulin dependent) include:
  • loss of weight
  • a very dry mouth/extreme thirst

  • feeling week or fatigued
  • blurred vision
Symptoms of type 2 diabetes include:
  • cuts/sores not healing properly
  • blurred vision
  • itchy skin
  • yeast infections

If left untreated, it can lead to some very serious health conditions, including: Diabetic Neuropathy Diabetic neuropathy is nerve damage as caused as a result of suffering from diabetes.
If you are a heavy smoker or drinker and do not maintain your glucose levels well, you are increasing your chances of suffering with this condition.
Heart Disease and Stroke Diabetics are at a greater risk of developing coronary heart diseases or to suffer from a stroke, compared to those who do not have diabetes.
This is due to the disease creating fatty deposits which can cause blockages in the arteries, which can then lead to heart attack.
Kidney Disease Kidney failure is one of the most common complications for those who suffer with diabetes.
This is because the disease can cause damage to the blood-filtering units within the kidneys.
Diabetic Eye Disease If not effectively monitored, numerous eye-related problems may be experienced as a result of diabetes.
This can include damage to the retina, cataract, cloudiness in the lens of the eyes, glaucoma, and build up of fluid pressure inside the eye which can lead to optic nerve damage.
If left untreated this can result in partial loss of vision or even total blindness.
If you recognise any of the symptoms listed above, please seek medical assistance as quickly as possible, to ensure that the disease is kept under control.
