Enzyme

Updated November 09, 2010.

Definition: proteins found in the body that act as catalysts, accelerating chemical reactions in the body. Enzymes work by lowering the amount of chemical effort needed for the reaction to take place.

Enzymes are highly efficient, increasing reaction rates by 100 million to 10 billion times faster than reactions that do not use an enzyme. Without enzymes, the chemical reactions in our body would take far too long to sustain life.

There are chemicals that interfere with enyzmatic activity called "enzyme inhibitors." Many cancer drugs are enzyme inhibitors, targeting the specific enzymes that support the rapid multiplication of cancer cells.
