How to Cure Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- 1). Take frequent breaks. If you're dealing with a mild case of carpal tunnel syndrome, take breaks to rest your hands. Leave the computer and apply a cold pack to your hands and wrist. This can ease pain and tingling.
- 2). Wear a wrist splint. Splints are designed to heal injuries, and they can effectively reduce the pain associated with carpal tunnel syndrome. Wrist splints should be worn while resting or sleeping.
- 3). Take an over-the-counter medication. Pain from carpal tunnel syndrome is often due to inflammation. Controlling the inflammation is the first step to stopping the pain. Take a non-prescription anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen.
- 4). Get a cortisone shot. If carpal tunnel pain doesn't respond to anti-inflammatory medications, talk to your doctor about a cortisone shot. Doctors inject the medication directly into the carpal tunnel. Cortisone reduces inflammation and stops carpal tunnel pain.
- 5). Consider carpal tunnel surgery. When non-surgical treatments are ineffective, doctors may recommend surgery to ease pain, numbness and tingling. During this procedure, a surgeon makes a small incision in the wrist and cuts the ligament that causes pressure and pain on the median nerve.
