Mokara Hotel & Spa, San Antonio
Mokara Hotel & Spa in a Nutshell:
Once home to the saddlery that outfitted horses of everyone from Teddy Roosevelt to the heroes of the Alamo, the Forbes Four-Star Mokara Hotel & Spa enjoys a privileged location along San Antonio's famed River Walk. While families can comfortably graze at the Mokara's sister property across the way, La Mansion del Rio, this contemporary hotel — with its four-poster beds, Jacuzzi tubs, adults-only spa, and rooftop pool — seems made for couples hot to trot on a honeymoon or romantic spree.
Note: the Mokara was formerly called the Watermark Hotel & Spa.
Guest Rooms at the Mokara Hotel & Spa:
The Mokara contains 98 stylish, high-ceilinged guest rooms. These sanctuaries are dominated by modern four-posters, their mattresses sheathed in soft Egyptian cotton. The drapery behind the headboard makes the the bed even more appealing. Set up strategically across from it is a flatscreen TV with cable access. Rooms are wired for the Web. Robes that make a stay even more comfortable are provided. Bathrooms are marble, but if you want a big tub for two, upgrade to a Spa Room. And do request accommodations with a Riverwalk view; street overlooks are uninspired.
Dining at the Mokara Hotel & Spa:
Ostra, the Mokara seafood restaurant, fronts the River Walk. Strolling mariachi musicians serenade patrons outdoors. Inside the restaurant is dominated by its full-service bar, which can dispense drinks made with 65 different kinds of tequilas; the $150-a-shot variety is under lock and key. The raw bar offers up oysters, clams, crab, shrimp, and ceviche.
The hotel also has a casual rooftop café.
Destination Weddings the Mokara Hotel & Spa:
The hotel has the capacity to host weddings that include 150 guests or fewer. Its largest room, The Saddlery, is on the street level. Couples who hold a destination wedding here have the convenience of using the salon and spa to prep for the main event. And the staff can help in organizing activities that range from yoga sessions to scavenger hunts and tequila tastings to off-premise visits to Texas ranches.
Activities at the Mokara Hotel & Spa:
The 17,000-square foot spa is a soothing sanctuary where children are not permitted. The Mokara also contains a fitness center and a small rooftop pool, perfect for cooling off after a day exploring the city.
Nearby the Mokara Hotel & Spa:
A lovely arched stone bridge — nicknamed Selena's Bridge, after the slain Mexican-American singer born in Texas — stands outside the Mokara, a tribute to the determination of local architect Robert Hugman to get the channel built (the official name of the overpass is the Hugman Bridge.) It's a romantic spot to watch the river boats cruise past, capture a photo, and steal a kiss and a hug, man. Couples can reach attractions along the River Walk, including La Villita, the San Antonio Museum of Art, and Pearl Brewery via the waterway or on land.
What Could be Improved at the Mokara Hotel & Spa:
The Mokara Hotel & Spa attracts a lot of positive reviews. The property is featured on Condé Nast Traveler's Gold List and Travel + Leisure’s roster of the World's Best Hotels. Indisputably, it's tops in town. Some guests report wi-fi connectivity problems.
Is the Mokara Hotel & Spa Right for You?:
The Mokara is a good choice for couples visiting San Antonio. Since it has no special facilities for children, it attracts single adults and loving duos more than families. So if you're planning a romantic getaway, this hotel is the venue for the serenity and sophistication you seek in the heart of Texas. Note: Smoking is not permitted inside the Mokara.
