How to Replace an IDE DVD Drive With a SATA Drive
- 1). Power down the computer and remove all cables from the back. Take the computer case cover off, either by sliding a panel open or removing the screws that secure the panel. Some computer covers may use release buttons or latches instead of screws for this purpose.
- 2). Remove the IDE and power cable from the back of the DVD drive by gently pulling the connector out. Remove any retaining screws in the drive bay, if your computer case uses them. Pull the DVD drive out.
- 3). Unscrew the drive mounting hardware if the current DVD drive is using it. Screw the mounting hardware onto the SATA DVD drive.
- 4). Slide the SATA DVD drive into the drive bay. Secure it with retaining screws if the computer case uses them.
- 5). Locate one of the SATA cables attached to the SATA-compatible motherboard. SATA cables are small round cables, almost always colored red. Attach this cable to the SATA interface slot on the left side of the DVD drive. Use the same power cable that the original DVD drive used on the right. Because both cable connectors are keyed, it's impossible to install them incorrectly.
