How to Replace Sand in a Pool Filter Valve
- 1). Turn off the filter system by shutting off the valve switch. Most filter systems switch off at the valve.
- 2). Remove the bolts with your wrench around the center of the tank on the filter. If it doesn't have bolts, remove any bands or straps around the filter tank and open the top of the tank.
- 3). Turn on your swimming pool filter sand vacuum and suck the sand out of the filter. Make sure all the old sand is removed from the filter.
- 4). Look at the laterals inside the filter tank. They are located on the bottom and keep sand from going into the pool. Make sure there is no damage to the laterals by inspecting for cracks.
- 5). Fill the filter tank with water 4 inches above the laterals in the bottom of the tank. This will protect laterals from any sand falling on them during replacement, which could cause damage.
- 6). Place a rag over the manifold pipe on the inside of the tank. This pipe will be sticking up in the filter tank. The rag will ensure that no sand gets in the pipe.
- 7). Pour the new filter sand into the tank until it is at the "full line" on the inside of the tank. Make sure to pour slowly so that you don't damage the laterals.
- 8). Replace the top of the tank and either screw the bolts back in place or replace the band around the top of the tank, depending on your filter type.
- 9). Turn the filter tank back on. Make sure that no sand is entering the pool.
