Homemade Toddler Costumes
- Dress your toddler as a Dalmatian puppy for a cute, warm costume. Lay a pair of washed white sweatpants and sweatshirt on a flat surface. Cut out black circles out of felt. Hot glue the felt circles on the pants and shirt. Buy another sweatshirt for the ears and tail. Cut off one sleeve of the extra shirt. Sew one end closed. Stuff the sleeve. Sew the other end shut and sew it to the bottom area of the pants. Glue spots on. Make ears by cutting out two ear shapes from the sweatshirt, sew together and stuff. Glue spots on with the glue gun. Sew the ears to a white bucket hat. Use costume make up to draw a black nose and whiskers.
- Dress your toddler as Dora for a simple character costume. Start out in a pair of orange shorts and a pink T-shirt. If it is cold out, use pants and a long-sleeved shirt. Add a backpack. Cut a side off a paper grocery sack and draw a map on it, or let your child color the map. Roll up the map and stick it in the backpack with one end sticking up. Encourage your toddler say, "Swiper, no swiping!" while trick-or-treating.
- Dress your toddler up as little Sandy or Danny from Grease. For Sandy, put a blouse on your toddler. Make a poodle skirt out of a large piece of felt. Cut a large oval out of felt. Cut a small hole for the waist. Slip it on your toddler. Pin the waist if need be with a safety pin. Cut to the right length. It should fall above the ankles. Cut out a poodle and glue it on the skirt. Glue a sequin strand around the poodle's neck for a collar and then add one for a leash. Have you toddler wear white socks and saddle shoes. If she has enough hair, put it in a side pony tail. For Danny, dress your boy in straight jeans, a white T-shirt and black jacket. Smooth his hair back with gel. Put black shoes or boots on him.
