- 1). Put on a pair of vinyl gloves and eye protection goggles to protect your skin from lye solution, which may come into contact with your eyes or hands. With the engine turned off, open the lid of your hydrogen generator to reveal the electrolyte/water solution in the holding chamber of the device.
- 2). Add 1/8 of a teaspoon of pure sodium hydroxide crystals into the hydrogen generator's solution and allow several minutes for the crystals to dissolve completely. Replace the lid to the hydrogen generator and start the engine.
- 3). Test the generator to see how many amperes are now blowing between the positive and the negative terminals of the hydrogen generator device by turning on your multimeter and setting it to measure amperes. Touch the metal tip of the black test probe to the terminal on which the black (negative) wire connects to the generator, and touch the metal tip of the red test probe to the terminal on which the red (positive) wire connects to the generator. Observe the reading.
- 4). Repeat steps 1 through 3, adding only 1/8 of a teaspoon of lye crystals at a time, until reaching the ampere reading desired and, thus, the desired production volume of hydrogen via the unit's electrolysis process.
