Jamaican Independence Activities in South Florida
- For several years, the South Florida Caribbean Chorale has been held in Fort Lauderdale's First Presbyterian Church on 15th Avenue. Approximately 1,300 people from churches around the area pack the building to celebrate Jamaican Independence Day with enthusiasm and praise. The 100-member chorus practices constantly for the event, and invite audience participation via folk performances and song.
- Each year in honor of Independence Day in Jamaica, the downtown Miami Tower, formerly known as the Bank of America, is lit with the colors of the Jamaican flag. This tradition began in 2007 to celebrate the emancipation of the country, and to thank Jamaicans for their contributions to south Florida's culture.
- Orlando's CityWalk provides eclectic nightlife entertainment, and this is no different for the celebration of Jamaican Independence Day. Patrons can enjoy live reggae music with drink specials at the Bob Marley restaurant and peruse merchandise from Jamaican and African vendors.
- The Jamaica Independence Reggae Jamboree features reggae and dancehall music from past and present stars. Past performers have included Gregory Isaacs, Frankie Paul, Tenor Blue and Etana. The location of this indoor festival varies each year, and discounted tickets can be purchased in advance.
