How to Build a Foldable Portable Pitchers' Mound
- 1). Form a circle using your foam blocks that is 18 feet in diameter. Most pitching mounds are approximately this size, with a slight rise at the center of the mound. To create the gradual rise, split foam blocks in half, then stack them and glue them around the center until the middle of the plate is approximately 10 1/2-inches high. Leave a small, thin line between the blocks going horizontally and vertically through the center to allow for folding.
- 2). Glue the foam blocks to the wrong side of a sheet of fiberglass fabric so the sheet makes the shape of a pitching mound. Allow the glue to dry for two hours before proceeding.
- 3). Coat the fiberglass sheet in resin, then apply an ultraviolet light to it for one to two minutes to cure the resin, making it hard. Once it is hard, turn off the ultraviolet light. This will allow the pitching mound to maintain its shape.
- 4). Detach the foam from the underside of the resin using your scissors. Sand any excess foam from the bottom of the fiberglass sheet.
- 5). Turn your mound upside down, then place your yardstick along the free lines you created by allowing gaps in the foam pieces. Score along the vertical and horizontal lines using your scoring tool, using light, even pressure. Use repeated passes until you can easily fold the opaque mound in half.
