AFL: Leadership group of Collingwood
At the end of 2008 Maxwell took over Scott Burns. The year 2009 was exceptional for Burns considering that he led the team amazingly and ended up with the second spot in the Copeland Trophy voting. This resulted into earning his maiden All Australian Guernsey.
The leadership group will be including Heath Shaw and Harry O'Brien for the first time. Darren Jolly has ended up in this group in his very first season at Collingwood.
After being a joint vice-captain in the previous season, Scott Pendlebury has been named the vice captain in 2010. On the other hand, Dane Swan, the 26 year old Copeland Trophy winning midfielder has been named the deputy vice-captain.
A veteran of 240 matches, Shane O'Bree will be included in the leadership group this time as well. The X vice-captain of the team, Josh Fraser and Tarkyn Lockyer are not a part of the leadership group this time as they have voluntarily stepped aside.
Since his suspension in 2008, 24 year old Shaw has come a long way to earn the leadership cap. He has proved his mettle in the recent matches and has shown an overall maturity.
Shaw's father Ray had been the former captain of Collingwood while his uncle Tony was the captain of the premiership of 1990. Shaw earned the third spot in the Copeland Trophy voting after the 2009 season got over. Since his debut in 2009 Shaw has played a total of 92 matches.
The Collingwood rookie-list success would definitely include O'Brien. At the end of 2006 he got promoted to the senior list. Till date he has played 85 games with Collingwood and has earned the top five spot of the Copeland Trophy Voting.
Jolly, the 28 year old player from Sydney joined Collingwood just last year and has played 166 games with Collingwood. He is considered as a premier rukmen of AFL.
