Furnishing a Guest Room

Today many attractive and creative design options lend flexibility and affordability to the sometimes challenging process of decorating a guest room. As a host or hostess, you can offer both comfort and style to visiting family members and friends - without overspending your budget.

Of course, many of the basic features of a well furnished guest room remain: at a minimum, most people want to offer a bed or beds, chairs, a table, and a place to store clothing and other personal items. It is also nice to provide your visitors with a way to keep track of the time; no one likes to visit another person's residence and oversleep. The essential furnishings of a typical hotel rooms essentially sum up the basic requirements of most family guest room.

Traditionally, many households placed their most beautiful items of furniture in a gently used guest room. You can still do this of course. And additionally, many innovations in interior design now make the task of developing a cozy yet luxurious guest room easier than ever before. A wide variety of design options allow greater flexibility. For example, if you would like to be able to accommodate many visitors without filling a guest room or rooms with several additional beds, consider adding a couch which can fold into a spare bed as needed. Or look into portable mattresses which store away conveniently underneath the bed frame. The latter can be purchased either with traditional mobile runners on a sliding frame or today even in an inflatable form. Inflatable mattresses in former years often proved flimsy and inconvenient and they sometimes damaged easily; today the technology has improved considerably.

Another attractive furnishing option exists in the wide variety of possible beds; many innovative styles permit the addition of bunk beds to a room for instance. Some "bunk beds" will stack in rows of three on top of existing single beds. This feature seems especially useful when families with many young children visit for an extended stay and a host or hostesses wishes to temporarily modify a guest room without completely altering the general arrangement of the furniture on a permanent basis.

Other decorating options which contribute to the creation of a tasteful guest room now include many furnishings on wheels; furniture which usually fills a role in another part of the home can be added to a guest room easily to accommodate additional visitors. Today even household appliances such as refrigerators sometimes have this attractive design feature also. A design aspect including mobility can improve the utility of a particularly heavy item of furniture such as a large bureau or chest of drawers, a couch or a table; the furniture can be used in another room until a need for it arises in a guest room.

The flexibility and convenience of this aspect of modern furniture may cause a household to consider purchasing additional furnishing items for eventual use in guest rooms for instance. Plus, it is sometimes possible to modify existing furnishings to add this design element. Regardless of the options selected, decorating a modern and comfortable guest room has become easier than ever before.
