How to Make a Comic from a Photo
- 1). Use a graphics program that has a comic strip special-effects filter. Photoshop is one of the most popular, but it is expensive and may be overkill for a procedure as simple as turning a photo into a comic. Photo to Cartoon and IntoCartoon are two moderately priced graphics programs designed to do nothing but turn photos into cartoons. Photo to Cartoon is very simple to use, but you're limited on options and how much control you have over the output. IntoCartoon is the best all-around software for this procedure because you have artistic control, but it may take practice to get used to it.
- 2). Open IntoCartoon, go to the "File" menu and select "Open," then browse to the photograph you want to turn into a cartoon. The photo will appear, along with a set of tools you can use to paint over the photo in layers if you want to create the cartoon from scratch. The palette includes an array of drawing and painting tools and tools for adjusting color balance and tone.
- 3). Go to the "Cartoon" menu. You can select from several options that will automatically create a line drawing, a cartoon or a sketch. If you choose one of these options, the photo will be rendered and you will be able to manipulate the results using the color balance tools. For precise control, select the first menu option, "InCartoon." You'll get a dialogue box and a preview of your image rendered as line art.
- 4). Work with each of the five tabs beneath your line art image to get the cartoon effect you want. The first tab lets you set the size of the picture. The second tab is where you will use slider controls to adjust the lines in your image. You can darken or lighten them, smooth them out and control detail. Move to the third tab and put a check in the "Draw Color" box, then use the last two tabs to work through the coloring process by adjusting balance and tone levels. The changes you make happen in real time so you can see your results before you save.
- 5). Click the "OK" button when you are satisfied with your work. Your photo is now a cartoon. You can finish it by selecting a cartoon bubble or the T for narrative text. A text toolbox will appear and you can type in the text you want to appear in your bubble or text box. Hover over your cartoon with your cursor and click to place your text object on the cartoon. Repeat the process with several photos to create a cartoon strip.
