- 1). Get at least an undergraduate degree. Some legislative analyst positions require a master's degree. Major in political science, or in a specialty area, such as economics, communication, business or a similar discipline that teaches analytical thinking. Additional classes in legal theory, or even law school, would dramatically increase your chances for success.
- 2). Learn and practice research skills, writing techniques and analytical methods, which will be necessary for success as a legislative analyst.
- 3). Volunteer for causes, both political and social, that you believe in. You can gain valuable experience and understanding of the political process.
- 4). Connect with lawmakers on the local, state and national level. Who you know is often as vital as what you know. For a legislative analyst, connections are often the most important assets you can bring to the table. Participate in election campaigns and petition drives to gain networking experience and greater understanding of the political system.
- 5). Research the Internet. Use your available resources, such as search engines and social networking websites; more than likely someone you know has a helpful connection. Make sure your potential colleagues know what you're passionate about. Many times a solid connection will seek you out when a compatible opportunity presents itself.
- 6). Look for a job before you complete your degree to increase the odds that you will have a job waiting upon graduation. Working as an intern while you are in school might get your foot in the door and increase your chance of landing a paid position. Don't limit your search to government entities. Many nonprofits, as well as major corporations, employ legislative analysts.
