If you're using Microsoft Word to create a document like a presentation or a Web page, adding video helps you provide a more interactive experience for your readers. There are two different players you can use to insert a video into a document. - Windows Media Player is Microsoft's own media player, which comes as an accessory to the Windows operating system. You can use it to embed movie clips already on your computer into a Word document. When embedding videos with Windows Media Player, select "Display As Icon" for the video to show in the document. Viewers can then double-click on the icon to play the video (see Reference 1).
- Acrobat 9 Pro Extended allows users to add multimedia files to Word, Excel and Powerpoint documents, as well as convert documents to high-quality PDFs. The program embeds FLV and SWF formats and converts other videos formats to FLV automatically when you insert them into a Word document. The software costs $699 as 2010 and is available from Adobe's website (see Reference 2).
- To insert movies into Microsoft Word using Windows Media Player, you need to have at least Word 2000 (see Reference 3). Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended is compatible with Word 2003 and later versions. According to Microsoft's website, you will also need to have a sound card installed on your computer. The video you want to install cannot be taken directly from the Web, it has to be an existing file on your hard drive before you embed it (see Reference 3).
