Gold Buffalo Coin - Discover Why It"s So Popular

103 1
The American Buffalo design was first introduced on nickels in 1913 by the United States Mint.
In 2006, 58 years after the Buffalo Nickel ceased production, a gold coin bearing the design was introduced.
It was so unusual because it was the first minting from the U.
S.
Mint that was .
9999 fine 24-karat.
The purity and content of these coins is guaranteed by the United States Government.
This 24 karat version was first originally minted on June 22, 2006.
The major images for both faces were originally designed by Fraser.
For the obverse (or front) side, Fraser had an Indian with three different American Indian tribes contributing features.
The reverse side (or back) features a buffalo standing on a mound of dirt, which was based on a real buffalo named Black Diamond that resided in Central Park Zoo in New York City.
The single contrast between the flip side of the nickel as opposed to the new coin is that on the flip side of the 24k Buffalo, you'll note that the mound is once again included, following its removal from the nickel back in 1913.
In addition you'll notice the inscriptions $50 1oz.
.
9999 FINE GOLD as well as IN GOD WE TRUST, a phrase that's been included on all U.
S.
strikes dating back to 1908.
The proof version alone bears the minter's mark W on the front.
This specimen was made to compete with the other foreign 24 karat coins that were found to be popular with collectors.
With such strong demand, the U.
S.
Mint expects to be continue minting this beauty for the foreseeable future.
