- 1). Clean the project of all dirt and debris. In order to properly stain and weatherproof an outdoor project, you'll need to make sure it's completely clean first. If the project has already been outdoors, sweep off all of the large debris and leaves with a broom. Power wash the project to make sure the finishing surface is completely clean. Don't set the power washer over 1200 psi in order to keep it from carving into the wood.
- 2). Stain the project with a stain suitable for outdoor use. These outdoor stains permeate the wood and offer a long-lasting color that is capable of holding up in the sun. Apply the stain with a deck brush if the project is large or a regular paint brush if it's not, following the grain of the wood. Allow the stain to dry for a few hours between coats and apply at least two coats of stain. Depending upon the type of stain you choose, it will have to be re-applied every three to five years.
- 3). Apply the waterproofing sealer. After the stain has completely dried, apply waterproofing sealant to your project using a garden pump sprayer. Do not use this in the garden after you are done, as it could kill your plants. Follow the grain of the wood and be sure not to paint yourself into a corner. Allow the sealant to dry per the manufacturer's instructions and re-seal the project with at least a second coat before exposing it to the elements. The more water you can prevent from soaking into the wood, the longer you can retain its original beauty.
- 4). Maintain the outdoor project. Make sure that you keep off dirt and debris, hose off any dirt and monitor the condition of the wood throughout the year. Clean and re-surface the project every two years to keep it looking good.
