How to Clean a Surplus Military Rifle After Firing Surplus Ammo
- 1). Remove the bolt of the rifle and spray window cleaner down the bore from the breech end, while pointing the muzzle at the ground. Continue spraying until liquid runs out of the barrel.
- 2). Spray a cotton cleaning patch with window cleaner and swab the bolt face with it. Then put the patch on the cleaning rod and push it through the bore from chamber to muzzle. Remove the patch at the muzzle. Repeat this procedure until a patch comes out clean.
- 3). Place a dry patch on the cleaning rod and push it through the bore from chamber to muzzle.
- 4). Wet a patch with normal bore solvent. Place this patch on the cleaning rod and push it through the bore. Follow this with another dry patch. This removes copper fouling. The window cleaner removes the corrosive salts, but will not remove copper fouling.
- 5). Wet a patch with gun oil, swab the bolt face, and place the oily patch on the cleaning rod. Push the oily patch through the bore from chamber to muzzle. Remove the patch from the cleaning rod, withdraw the cleaning rod, and replace the bolt.
