How to Use Ham Radio Transmitters With Sound Cards
- 1). If you want to transmit as well as receive using digital modes, you will need an amateur radio license from the Federal Communications Commission. A high-frequency, or HF, ham radio operating on the bands on or above ten meters is required for operating in the digital modes. Select a line-out that is compatible with your specific model of radio. Consult your radio's user's manual for information on compatible lines and connectors.
- 2). Download free software designed for digital modes for ham radio. There are several programs available, but one of the easiest for new digital mode users is DigiPan which is built around PSK31 -- Phase Shift Keying, Baud 31, referring to the way the signal is processed and the speed at which it is delivered.
- 3). Click to run the DigiPan setup. You will need to provide your ham callsign. Take time to familiarize yourself with the software.
- 4). Check your computer for the presence of a sound card. Most computers built within the last five years shipped with a sound card already installed.
- 5). Plug the audio line-out into its jack on the ham radio. Plug the line-in into the corresponding jack on your computer, usually located near the inputs for headphones and microphones on the side of your computer. Digipan will automatically help your radio and your computer work together. Type a simple message and watch it appear on the waterfall display on your computer screen. Transmit it to a fellow ham who is using PSK31.
