How to Conduct Keyword Research for Your Blog

Starting a blog for your business is a critical step to your online success.
Before you can start optimizing your site and creating content, though, you'll need to do little bit of keyword research.
Many business bloggers think that simply using terms related to their field of business is enough, but specific research will prove exactly what words your potential customers are using when they're conducting their own searches - and those words they're using won't necessarily be what you expect.
Start with a Clean Slate You do know more about your business than anyone else but you probably don't know how search engine optimization really works.
Even though you know what terms you'd use to describe your products and services, it can be difficult to determine what words your potential customers might be using to search for those same products.
They may know that they need something but don't really know the words to use.
When this happens, they may end up using words that are only loosely related to the actual product.
These words can quickly become more popular with the search engines than the product terms you had in mind.
They're using layman's terms while you're using industry-specific terminology.
You'll need to incorporate the former into your site's content and into your marketing campaign.
Find a Great Keyword Research Tool There are several keyword research tools available for businesses and bloggers.
Some of the most popular include Wordtracker, Google Suggest, and the Google AdWords Keyword Tool.
The Google AdWords Keyword tool is free for use and is a great place to get started.
Take the list of words you think people are using and enter them into the tool itself.
You'll soon have a list of words related and phrases related to the ones you entered.
You'll also see a number of extra columns with statistics regarding each word or phrase.
These statistics will give you an idea of the word's search volume, the level of competition for that word, and the conversion rate.
Go through the list and get rid of any words that have absolutely nothing to do with your business.
Once those are gone, look at the list and figure out which phrases best target your products and services.
Be specific.
You may sell "widgets" but your potential customers may be looking for "super widgets," "traditional widgets," or "blue widgets.
" These narrower terms will make it easier for you to gain targeted traffic that is more likely to convert into a sale.
Using Your Keywords Once you have a list of 10-20 targeted keywords you can begin including them in the content you place on your business's blog.
The trick here is to naturally include only 2-3 keywords in the content on each page, allowing your work to appear natural while still attracting search engine attention.
You'll also need to ensure your main keywords are included in your site's title tag, meta description, and headings.
Keyword research does take time but it's crucial to the success of your business's website and blog.
Take your time and think about your target audience.
You'll start to see website growth sooner than you anticipated!
