- Yucca plants need full sunlight from a southern location. Although the plants can survive and grow in partial shade, flowering yuccas need full sunlight at least six hours a day to bloom. Keep the temperatures between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. When temperatures are allowed to drop below 30 degrees F the plant may not flower in the summer due to shock.
- Although yucca plants don't need fertilizer to grow and flower, plants that aren't flowering may need fertilizer to encourage flowering. Use a slow-release 19-6-12 NPK fertilizer every three months. Use 7 grams of fertilizer for an 8-inch container plant. Water the soil thoroughly after adding the fertilizer.
- After the flowers are gone, cut the flower stalk off at the base of the plant so that the plant's energy is not wasted on the stalk. Remove any dead leaves at the base of the trunk. Removing the dead foliage and dead flower stalk will help the plant store up energy to flower the following year.
- Repot the yucca plants about every three years in a container about 2 to 3 inches in diameter larger than the old container between March and May. Always transplant the yucca the same depth that it is in the old container. After repotting the plant, place it in a shaded location for three to four days before moving into the sun so the roots have time to adjust to the recent transplanting. Some yuccas may not bloom until the year after transplanting.
