    Overwrite a Hosts File with No Extension

    • 1). Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the “Windows\System32\drivers\etc” directory in the left pane. To find another file, click the “Start” button and type *filename* (the file name surrounded by asterisks). Press the “Enter” key. The Windows Search feature will locate all indexed files with the specified name.

    • 2). Right-click inside the right pane of Windows Explorer and select “New”.

    • 3). Select “Text Document” from the available new file types. Notepad will launch with a blank page open.

    • 4). Type the following two lines into the new text file, without quotes:

      “127.0.0.1 localhost”

      “::1 localhost”

    • 5). Click the “File” link, and then click “Save As” from the top menu.

    • 6). Type “Hosts”, with quotes into the “File Name” input box.

    • 7). Click the “Save” button.

    • 8). Click “Yes” to confirm the overwriting operation. The new Hosts file will be saved, without a file extension, over the old Hosts file.

    Rename a Hosts File with No Extension

    • 1). Right-click on the file, and then select “Rename” from the context menu. The file name will highlight for typing.

    • 2). Type “Host2” or another name into the text input area.

    • 3). Click the desktop, or just click outside the highlighted area to save the new file name. The file name will save without a file extension.
