When Do I Not Need to File Federal Income Taxes?
- Any person who has no income during the year does not have to file an income tax return. If you did have income, you may have to file a return if your income exceeds certain minimum levels. Money you receive for performing a job is only one of many types of income that you might have during the year. Money you receive in the form of interest payments, dividends, rent, royalties, cash for contract work, gambling winnings and selling assets for a profit also count as income.
- The IRS states that if you are single and under the age of 65, you only have to file a tax return if your income is $9,350 or more. If your income is less than $18,700 as a married couple filing jointly, $12,050 as the head of household or $3,650 as a married person filing separately, you are not required to file a tax return.
- According to the IRS, single filers age 65 or older do not have to file a tax return if their income is less than $10,750. Married filers age 65 or older must file if their income is $20,900 or more or $19,800 if one spouse is under the age of 65. Married couples filing separately must submit returns if their income is $3,650 or more regardless of their ages.
- Even if your income is substantially less than the general requirement for your filing status and age, you might have to file an income tax return if you have self-employment income. Self-employment income is money you receive for running a business or contract work where you are not being paid by an employer and no taxes are withheld from your income. The IRS states that you must file a tax return if your self-employment income is $400 or more.
