Matthew Vaughn Exits "X-Men 3"
Vaughn was chosen for the job by the studio on the merits of his rookie directorial effort, the British crime drama "Laker Cake." Prior to directing ""Layer Cake," Vaughn had been a producer working mainly with Madonna's husband, director Guy Ritchie.
Vaughn was apparently concerned about uprooting his family and moving them to Los Angeles and Vancouver during the shoot.
Fox president Hutch Parker told The Hollywood Reporter, "We understand Matthew's reasons for leaving, as nothing is more important than family. Luckily, we have a fantastic script, the original cast is returning, and there will be some great new characters. We will decide shortly among several directors who are keenly interested in the project and are fully committed to remaining right on schedule."
Fox's Hutch statement is the first official word that Halle Berry and Hugh Jackman are returning for the third "X-Men" movie. Filming on "X-Men 3" starring Jackman, Barry, Famke Janssen, Anna Paquin, Patrick Stewart, Shawn Ashmore, Daniel Cudmore, and Alan Cumming is expected to begin in early August with a projected release date of May 26, 2006.
The studio recently announced the addition of Kelsey Grammer as Beast and former British soccer player turned actor Vinnie Jones as Juggernaut.
Vaughn is the second director to leave "X-Men 3." "X-Men" and "X2: X-Men United" helmer Bryan Singer chose to direct "Superman Returns" for Warner Bros over the third film of the "X-Men" franchise.
