Homemade Birdfeeders
- Milk carton feeders are fun and easy to make and will attract a variety of birds. Cut two large windows in the milk carton and decorate the carton with crayons. To avoid any choking hazards or toxins for the birds, avoid tape, glue or markers. Pierce the top of the carton and run a thin wire or string through it. Tie the feeder to a tree branch and fill the bottom of the carton with bird seed of your choice.
- A soda bottle makes a perfect bird feeder while recycling at the same time. Completely remove the label from the bottle to avoid a choking hazard for the birds. Drill two 5/16" holes toward the top of the bottle and insert two sticks crossing each other through the bottle. Pierce the bottle several times to make little "feeding stations" for the birds. Remove the cap and fill the bottle about half way and replace the cap. Hang the feeder cap side down from a tree branch and enjoy.
- A pine cone feeder is a simple feeder to make. Although it does not last long, the pine cone coupled with the bird seed will attract a wide variety of birds to your feeder. Find a medium-to-large-sized pine cone in the woods (or you can purchase pine cones at most any large chain craft store). Spread a thick layer of peanut butter over the pine cone and roll the pine cone in birdseed of your choice. Loop ribbon or string around the top of the pine cone and hang it on a tree branch.
- A bagel feeder only lasts a day or two but is a fun project that also recycles stale bagels. Simply take a stale bagel and spread a thick layer of shortening or peanut butter over the entire bagel. Roll the bagel in bird seed and tie it to a tree branch using yarn or ribbon. The lard or peanut butter add extra nutrition for the birds and the entire feeder is completely edible.
