    • 1). Go through all of your old tax records. You may have these retained in a file, year by year. You should keep copies of all tax documents for at least seven years, a recommendation from the IRS. This will help you navigate through an audit if one is requested.

    • 2). Find out how your filed your taxes in 2007. Common filings are handled through a CPA (certified public accountant) or online. If you're unsure, look at where you filed previous taxes and use that as a guide.

    • 3). Log on to your profile at your online tax preparer, if you filed online. Use the user ID and password you used to file. Click on "Access a new/old return." This will take you to a pdf copy of all previous tax records. Download this file to your computer. Retain this on your hard drive or print it out for your records.

    • 4). Contact your CPA, if you used one to file your taxes. Ask for a copy of your 2007 taxes. Your accountant should be able to pull these up and send them to you via email, fax or through the mail. There should be no fee for this service.

    • 5). Contact your local IRS office if you still cannot find a copy of your taxes. See Resources for contact information. This process will take longer, but local officials at the IRS will be able to locate your records and send them to you via mail. There may be a charge for this service, however.
