Making a Cheap Desk For Kids

If you need a desk for a school-aged child, or even for college student, you may find that they are too expensive to be worth it.
Desks for students seem to come in one of two varieties.
The first is inexpensive, but so small or cheaply made that they aren't worth it.
The other kind are expensive desks which, though made of a better quality, are usually so costly as to be impractical.
This is especially true for younger children who may damage a high-quality desk anyway.
If you don't mind the look of it, there is a very cheap and easy solution.
This is for people who are very practical, and don't mind their child's rooms looking a little odd.
The solution is quite simple.
You can find a door at a local hardware store, without the whole drilled in it yet for the doorknob, and lay it flat across two filing cabinets.
This may sound tacky at first, but it is very practical.
First, most desks are too small.
Many kids need a place put a computer.
If there is a computer on the desk, most desks don't leave any additional room for writing.
And most school students are required to actually write their homework, not do it on a computer.
If the students do not have a computer, they still need room to spread out their papers.
And, desks make a great place for them to play, such as building Legos, putting puzzles together, etc.
A small desk does not really work well for these things.
In addition, having the filing cabinets is a great way to have the storage that you need.
Small, two-drawer filing cabinets are the perfect height for an elementary school student.
So the filing cabinets make the desk correct height, and add the storage that a student will need for papers, pencils and pens, etc.
Overall, the price tag of a desk made of two filing cabinets and a door is very, very low.
In fact it is less than even the cheapest desk that you can buy.
And it offers more storage space and more surface space.
When you buy the door from the hardware store, make sure you get one that does not yet have a hole cut in it.
Most stores will sell the door without the whole already drilled.
You may want to apply a coat of paint, or at the very least stain.
This offers a little bit of protection.
One fun thing to do is to paint the door bright and crazy colors.
It can be painted to match the room, or you can let the kids paint it so that it has some of their style.
