Alternative, Traditional Or Complementary?

103 1
There are a lot of different types of alternative medicine.
I am most familiar with herbal remedies, but it is only a small part of the larger group.
Traditional medical practices have a tendency to scoff at herbs, though they shouldn't.
Many of the drugs they prescribe are still manufactured from herbs.
Thankfully, there is a change in that way of thinking.
It's called complementary care.
That means that the doctor works with others who use alternative methods to provide the best quality of care for you, the patient.
There are many benefits to this, particularly when it comes to herbal remedies.
Some conditions can be made worse by herbal preparations.
There are also side effects and interactions to consider.
I don't know all of them, but I know a great deal, and where to look for more information.
Most doctors don't know a great deal about herbs.
I've met two who have more than a passing knowledge, but most don't.
Some are actually nervous about people taking them, because they don't know what will happen.
I can help there.
For me, working with a doctor is ideal because I can't diagnose or prescribe...
which is as it should be.
I haven't had training for those actions, the doctor has.
The best I can do is make an educated guess, and that is not in the best interest of the patient.
Another benefit comes with medications.
Traditional medicine has many beneficial attributes and prescription medications should not be discounted.
There are times when they are absolutely required; herbs won't do the job.
A good example would be heart attacks.
I know herbs that will lower blood pressure and cholesterol.
I know some that will thin the blood.
I don't have any herbs that will save valuable heart tissue during a heart attack.
The doctor and the hospital are what is needed.
All told, I think the concept of complementary care is a good one.
It will benefit doctor, herbalist and patient, allowing us to work together for the common good.
