Reading many fly fishing books could become quite time consuming, but it could easily be less time consuming and less expensive than taking lessons from an actual professional instructor.
There are approximately 5,000 books devoted to the sport listed on just Amazon alone.
A Beginner should look for books that focus on all aspects of this sport.
There are many things one needs to consider and if possible do some research on before diving into this sport.
The Fly fishing book you purchase(or borrow from the local library) should include topics such as; purchasing the right equipment, how the equipment works, the best techniques to start out with and, spotting areas with high potential for fish.
One of the most important topics the book should cover is purchasing the equipment that is right for you.
It should cover both freshwater and saltwater fishing if that is what you intend to do.
Different rods and reels can be used in either situation.
The book should cover topics like the 3 main types of fly reels and the advantages/disadvantages of each.
The different materials used to make the rods such as; graphite, bamboo, or fiberglass.
Lastly the book should have information on the best situations to use which type of fly.
Once you understand the basics, own the equipment, and have practiced some of the different techniques it is time to find places nearby to do some fishing.
While you can try your luck at a local river or body of water, information on the best location can be found in fly fishing books.
At this point another great resource for those just getting started can be your local fishing supply store.
Not all, but many stores have people that actually fish working behind the counter that can tell you about some of the local hot spots for fishing.
