These filter out the water from the waste and then turn around and deposit the waste back into the earth.
They're a little bit more expensive, but when you think about the long term good you're doing, it's worth it.
There is also the dual flush and pressure assisted models, which aim to save water by doing it right the first flush around.
In addition to that, they do a better job at rinsing out the bowl.
Don't forget about the Japanese toilets, either.
