From the subfreezing climate of the Himalayans to warm coastal regions, the terrain of India supports many summer flowers. The summer season shines from March to May with monsoon season beginning in June. Regardless of rain or shine, a palette of colors dot the countryside and gardens, as summer flowers burst forth in a variety of shapes and sizes that add beauty and vibrancy to India. - The musk rose (Rosa brunanii) grows wild throughout India. This plant produces fragrant white flowers that cluster towards the ends of the branches. The musk rose starts to bloom in May, and its white flowers have five petals and a yellow center. Lance-like green leaves grow opposite one another. Dark rose hips form purple-brown to dark red when the flower finishes blooming.
- The blue poppy (Meconopsis aculeate) flowers in summer, revealing blue, cup-like blooms with four delicate petals and a yellow center. The poppy grows in meadows and rock outcroppings. The foliage of the blue poppy grows sparsely and sprouts bristles on irregularly shaped leaves. These flowers need moist soil and shade to blossom.
- While many types of irises thrive in India, the Kumaon iris (Iris kemaonensis) grows native to the Himalayans, receiving its name from the Kumaon region. Individual flowers bloom on short stalks with spots or blotches of lilac and pale purple colors and a yellow beard on outer petals. Large clumps of these irises bloom from April to July at altitudes of 2,800 to 4,000 meters. Iris flowers have a special significance in the Manipuri New Year, or the festival of Chere, when they are given as offering to god.
- The Himalayan columbine (Aquilegia pubiflora) grows in partially shaded areas on the slopes of the mountain range. From June to July, these flowers blossom in various shades of purple to pink as they unfurl their petals during monsoon season. The flower is recognizable by its five backward projecting spurs of the inner petals. The spurs are full of nectar. A row of inner and outer petals forms the columbine, which grows in a drooping fashion
