    • 1). Write down the size of your pond, the pond's water capacity and the amount of fish you have now and plan to add in the near future. Your salesman should be able to direct you to the filters that are perfect for your situation.

    • 2). Make sure the Koi pond filter you are considering offers both mechanical and biological capabilities. The mechanical filtration will remove organic waste and the biological filtration will removes nitrates and ammonia from the water.

    • 3). Check to be sure that the organic waste in the mechanical portion of the filter can be easily removed. This will generally need to be removed manually. If not removed, it can release harmful bacteria into the pond water.

    • 4). Look for a quality filter that will not require a lot of maintenance. Cheaper is not always better. If you base your decision on price alone, you may come to regret it. You should be able to find a Koi pond filter that is top-quality at a good price. Take the time to shop and compare. Always ask questions before your final decision.
