What to Pack for a Trip to Ireland

    Weather

    • Since Ireland is an island sitting in the North Atlantic, its weather can be quite changeable on any given day and in any time of year. Even in the middle of summer, it is significantly cooler than most summer destinations by American standards. The best concept to embrace: Dress in layers.

Make sure you bring a sweater or sweaters, a jacket, jeans or slacks, and long- and short-sleeve shirts. A common saying is if you don't like the weather in Ireland, just wait a minute. It could be sunny and a warm 75 degrees one moment, and chilly, breezy and 55 degrees when the sun ducks behind the clouds. It's best to be prepared.

Also keep in mind that as an island, rain is a common occurrence in Ireland. Even though the summer months tend to be the driest, breezy storms blow in and out often. Make sure you pack rain gear.

    Weight

    • Keep in mind how you plan to travel. If you are planning on staying in bed and breakfast establishments, a quite common way to travel, you'd be well served to think about the number of bags and their weight when packing.

    Shoes

    • All people, locals and tourists alike, do a considerable amount of walking in Ireland. You'll want to have a pair of comfortable walking shoes with you. Considering the chance of rain during certain times of the year, you'll be better served to carry more than one pair. Comfort is the singular word in footwear for this trip.

    Formality

    • While casual attire is more than acceptable at most tourist destinations in Ireland, depending on where you choose to dine, more formal attire may be advisable. While in no way required in most places, gentlemen who travel with a jacket or ladies with a proper dress will never be out of place.
