809 Wells Avenue - The Wells Avenue Grocery was a neighborhood grocery store. The grocery is no longer standing beside the home but there are still marbles in the sidewalk that spell out the store name. There was a small stove, a meat and cheese counter, crates of various soft drinks, and a bucket or two, which you could sit on to rest, or eat lunch, which probably consisted of a couple of slices of bologna, a slice of cheese and a few soda crackers, and share a story with your friends.
It was a busy place, and credit was extended to everyone.

Mrs. Porter, who ran the place, was a strong old woman, and greeted everyone. All the school age children knew Mrs. Porter because they went there before and after classes, and sometimes DURING class. She would sell cigarettes, one at a time, was good to keep a secret, and was known as a "Nice Lady."
