How to Prepare to Hand Paint a Toilet Seat

    • 1). Place several sheets of newspaper on a flat workbench or other surface.

    • 2). Use a pair of channel lock pliers to remove the toilet seat from the toilet. Wear latex gloves to keep your hands clean.

    • 3). Place the toilet seat on to the newspaper-covered flat workbench or other surface.

    • 4). Fill a small container with 2 cups of hot water. Fill a bucket with 1/2 gallon of warm water and 2 tablespoons of dish-washing soap.

    • 5). Dip a clean sponge in the soap solution. Wring out excess solution. Clean the toilet with the soap solution-soaked sponge. Wet a clean cloth or towel with hot water. Rinse the toilet seat with the damp cloth or towel. Dry the toilet with a clean dry cloth or towel.

    • 6). Sand the toilet seat with 180-grit sandpaper. Wipe the toilet seat with a dry cloth or towel when you have finish sanding.

    • 7). Apply one coat of primer to the toilet seat using a paintbrush.

    • 8). Let the primer dry overnight before painting the toilet seat with acrylic or another type of paint.
