Nargis: The Legendary Actress
She was introduced into the world of cinema by her mother Jaddanbai, who was a classical singer and courtesan, to stop her from becoming a courtesan too.
She has acted in several critically acclaimed films with the celebrated actors Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar. A few of those films are Deedar, Barsaat, Awaara and Andaz. Mother India stands out as her best movie in her career, which span through the '40s to '60s. For this film, she received the best actress award in Filmfare awards. She portrayed the role of Radha which was believed as one of her best roles ever. It is heard that her co-actor Sunil Dutt, who in future got married to her, saved her from a fire accident during the shooting of this movie.
Nargis quit acting after her marriage. They had 3 children; Priya Dutt, Namratha and Sanjay Dutt.
Nargis was the recipient of the Urvashy Award, the highest honor given to a movie actress in Bollywood. She is the also the recipient of National Award, Padma Shri and Karlovy Award. It was for the first time that a female star of Bollywood got the celebrated Padma Shri.
Apart from winning a lot of awards, Nargis founded the Ajanta Arts Cultural Troupe, together with her husband. This group, with many well known Indian film actors and actresses, entertained Jawans at the border.
This troupe is the first among others to perform in Dhaka after Pakistan and India combat. Nargis was also nominated to the Rajya Sabha. But, she could not complete her term of office as she was found to have pancreatic cancer and succumbed to it.
Other than being known as an veteran actress, Nargis also spend many hours to do social work. She supported The Spastics Society of India and put efforts towards the advantage of children affected with spastic ailments. She could not be forgotten by her family members. It was apparent from the vacant seat left at the first screening of Sanjay Dutt's first film, Rocky. She has the Nargis Dutt Memorial Cancer Foundation built in her memory.
