Teacher assistants in Texas who apply for a position as Educational Aide I must have at least a high school diploma. They also should have experience working with parents and/or students. An Educational Aide I does not provide academic instruction but might supervise children on the playground, in a computer lab, in the cafeteria or in the library. She also might perform clerical duties. - An Educational Aide II must have at least a high school diploma or GED. Additionally, she must have two years experience as an Educational Aide I or she must have completed at least 15 hours of college coursework in the areas of child development or academic subjects. An Educational Aide II might supervise students throughout the school campus and also provide academic instruction under the close supervision of a classroom teacher.
- An Educational Aide III must hold at least a high school diploma or GED along with either three years experience as a lower level Educational Aide or 30 hours of college coursework in child development or academic subject areas. An Educational Aide III provides student instruction under the guidance of a classroom teacher.
- Any teacher assistant providing instruction to a student must be highly qualified. To be considered highly qualified, she must complete at least two years of college coursework, complete an associate's degree or pass an exam demonstrating her ability to instruct students in writing, reading and math.
