How to Word a Graduation Thank You Note
- 1). Begin your thank you note by addressing the person you are thanking. You may address family and friends by their first name, but use titles and last names for teachers or coaches. For example, "Dear Aunt Lisa" for a family member, and "Dear Coach Avery" for your football coach.
- 2). Thank the person for the gift or contribution in the first line of your note. Mention the gift specifically, for example, "Thank you for the beautiful leather planner you gave me for graduation." or "Thank you for your helping me with my math lessons this year." If the gift was monetary, do not mention the amount; instead, say how you will use it.
- 3). Continue the note with a line or two about how you plan to use the gift, or how much you appreciate it and why. For example, "I plan to use the money to buy a new outfit for my first day on the job." or "The planner will help me stay organized in graduate school.". For a gift of time or support, you can write "I never could have made it without you." or "Your tutoring made the difference between a passing grade and a failing grade."
- 4). Add a personal line meant especially for the person to whom you are sending the note. Some examples are "Let's plan to do lunch when you're in town next time." or "I'd love to stay in touch, let's get coffee soon."
- 5). Sign off by thanking the person again, or using a closer such as "Sincerely," "Thanks again," or "Warm regards." Sign your name underneath.
