How to Make a Gundam Suit
- 1). Find the Gundam you would like to make a suit for. There is a wide variety of Gundams and each suit must be tailored specifically to that Gundam's specifications. Check the Resources section below to find many different websites detailing different Gundams. Alternatively, you can use resources such as Google Image Search to find a variety of pictures.
- 2). Cut and model the piece you are working with, starting with inner regions such as the torso. Build outward to the chest, arms, legs and then to the hands, feet and head last as to maintain scale. To make these pieces work as a suit, you will need to tailor them to your own body. For example, if you are working on a hand, model the cardboard or poster board to your hand so that it is a snug fit. If you are building the head, build a base piece around your head so that it fits naturally and then build other pieces on top of it depending on the Gundam. Make sure that each piece is able to be attached and re-attached easily and that no pieces wobble around, especially if you plan on walking in the costume.
- 3). Be creative with your model pieces. For example, you may want to model the feet around a pair of old shoes, the hands around some gardening gloves and the helmet around a baseball or motorcycle helmet. Building the pieces on top of existing equipment will make the suit that much more impressive and sturdy.
- 4). Glue or tape the pieces of your model suit as necessary. For example, if you built each finger separately you will want to glue or tape each digit onto the hand. Use colored tape only inside of the model to prevent it from looking subpar. Some parts of the Gundams include horns and spikes and, while these may seem difficult to keep straight on top of the other parts of the suit, with the right tools and ingenuity these pieces will stand on their own.
- 5). Color or paint the pieces accordingly, depending on which Gundam suit you are creating. For example, Strike Gundam has a lot of white but also other colors like red, blue and yellow in many parts of its body. While most cardboard is brown, white poster board is the easiest to paint over and produces a more realistic result.
- 6). Try on the pieces and adjust them as necessary. Depending on your experience, you may need to remake pieces and adjust pieces of the suit until it fits your body just right.
