Taquila is a picturesque island located on Titicaca lake about 43 kilometers from Puno. The inhabitance of the island is more than 2 000 people. Its citizens are called Taquilenos. The highest point on the island is 4 050 meters. Taquila's main village is situated on the heights of 3950 meters. The island is hilly and narrow, besides the picturesque location offers great opportunities for tourism.

People living on the island are famous for the best quality of clothing and textiles. Surprising fact is males usually do all the knitting; they are used to it since the early age. Boys usually start doing it at the age of 8. Women's task is to make weave and yarn.
Since the seventieth many people started visited Taquila but the tourism wasn't well established yet. They managed to create all facilities for tourists: transportation, restaurants and cultural activities. There is a local travel agency on the island which became pretty popular.

Taquilenos' social life is based on Inca moral principles such as do not steal, lie or be lazy. The economy of the island is basically based on the tourism and agriculture. Tourism is quite a profitable business here as the island is visited by almost 40 000 tourists annually.

The island has a diverse wildlife with cows, chickens and guinea pigs.
The island offers restaurants with traditional Peruvian food. Having breakfast on the island you will most likely be served pancakes, eggs and a cup of tea. For lunch for the first course the typical meal is vegetable soup, for the second ‚¬€ rice with vegetables.

The majority of people here are Catholic.

The island is calm and it is rare place in Peru when nobody is trying to make you buy something from him or her, because in other places crowded with tourists the situation is completely different. Everyone is trying to make you buy something. The interesting thing in Peru is that the prices on the tags are usually not the final ones. The amount of money you spend usually depends on your ability to bargain. But even when you can bargain well enough it is hard to resist when they start offering you numerous discounts and packages as if you buy one you get another for free. To avoid this it is better to keep in mind the maximum price you are eager to spend and don't let yourself to be tricked.
