How to Prevent Overheating While Tanning
- 1). Pack a beach bag with sunscreen, a cold water bottle, an ice pack/frozen water bottle, a spray bottle filled with water, a light garment (t-shirt, sundress), hat, proper identification and your cell phone.
- 2). Apply sunscreen one half an hour before you anticipate being in the sun.
- 3). Find a spot on the beach that has some sort of access to shade, whether that be near a tree, bathroom or lifeguard station. If you feel too warm you can move your set-up into the shade.
- 4). Store your water bottle in a cool place, such as inside your bag, to prevent it from warming due to direct sun exposure. Do the same with your ice pack. If you can carry a small ice chest with you, that's even better, as you can keep these items insulated.
- 5). Gauge how your skin feels after 30 to 45 minutes in the sun. If you're openly sweating, turning red or feeling uncomfortable, douse some water on yourself. You can do this by stepping into the ocean for a bit, applying the ice pack to your wrists, neck and underarms and drinking some water. Once you've cooled down make sure to apply more sunscreen to yourself.
- 6). Drape the light clothing item over your shoulders, head or legs if you feel like one part of your body is getting especially hot. To get the sun out of your face, put on your hat.
- 7). Move to the shade if the weather becomes particularly hot or overbearing. You can also momentarily walk into a cool building like a fast food establishment or a convenience store if one is nearby.
