How to Train to Groom Dogs
- 1). Attend an accredited pet-grooming school. You can find these schools through the National Dog Groomers Association of America. The cost of these schools can range from a few hundred dollars to thousands of dollars, based on how much time is involved, which can be as little as two weeks and up to five months. The cost is also based on whether you become state certified or just certified through the school. A state certificate and professional training are not required in most cases, but they will give you opportunities to get hired by professionals who require such training.
- 2). Consider receiving certification through The National Dog Groomers Association of America. This approach requires passing exams and proving your skills, but it can help advance your career as a dog groomer.
- 3). Work for a dog groomer through an apprenticeship program, which generally lasts from six to 10 weeks. This program is where you can get hands-on training. Look for training program that sets you up with an apprenticeship when your classroom work is done, preferably with a groomer who has at least 10 years of experience.
- 4). Start out with simple grooming tasks, such as bathing dogs and bringing them out to their owners, once the grooming process is finished. This practice gives you an idea of how the industry works.
