Cupressus sempervirens, also known as Italian cypress, is a hearty evergreen tree used for accenting homes, parks, fields and cemeteries. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Italian cypress can reach heights of 40 to 60 feet, with a width of three to six feet. Because of their hearty growth and elegant look, there are many varieties of field-grown Italian cypress trees produced in California. - Cupressus sempervirens 'Glauca,' or Glauca Italian cypress, is a midsized cultivar, grown for formal landscaping and as a large-building accent. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Glauca Italian cypress reaches heights of 25 to 40 feet, with a spread of 3 to 6 feet. The tree grows in a variety of well-drained soils, including clay, loam, sand, acidic and alkaline. Glauca is popular for use in California because it has high drought resistance and grows best in warm, full-sun climates. The tree is susceptible to pests, such as the fungal disease root rot, mites, cankers and bagworms.
