Many people imagine themselves living in a tropical paradise during their golden years or in a quaint foreign town. However, some people assume they couldn't afford to retire abroad. Aside from cost, consider factors such as the language spoken in a particular place, the food and goods available, legal residency requirements and available healthcare, as the Retiring Overseas website suggests.

    Mexico

    • Retiring in Mexico makes sense for many reasons if you live in the western hemisphere. It's nearby, making visiting family and friends, or having them visit you, fairly inexpensive and easy. It has a rich and fascinating culture that you can continue to explore for the rest of your life. And, as International Living raves, Mexico has extremely low property taxes, healthcare costs and general cost of living. According to the Escape Artist website, you can live in Mexico for $350 U.S. a month.

    Crete

    • Retiring Overseas highly recommends retiring on the island of Crete in Greece because of its laidback lifestyle, healthy diet and affordability. By escaping to the peacefulness of Crete, you'll experience traditional Greek life in a beautiful ocean-side setting filled with friendly, hospitable people. According to the Expat Forum, the cost of living is 30 percent below that of other European countries.

    Ecuador

    • Nature lovers will greatly enjoy the diverse environments of Ecuador, from the Galapagos Islands to the Amazon rain forest, as International Living says. And everyone will love the welcoming attitude of locals, as well as the very low cost of living, the website adds. You can live a life of luxury there for well under $17,000 per year, according to the website.

    Thailand

    • Moving to Southeast Asia can allow you to live a luxurious lifestyle for much less than it would cost in the United States. According to the Expat Forum, you can live well for $1,000 to $1,200 U.S. a month. The Global Post suggests considering relocating to Thailand for its high quality of health care and low costs of living, such as buying or renting a home. Plus, you'll get to bask on some of the world's most beautiful beaches, explore the vibrant culture and eat one of the world's most popular cuisines on a daily basis if you choose. Thailand's neighbor Malaysia also boasts diverse cultures and low costs of living or vacationing.

    South Africa

    • South Africa will delight retirees who enjoy cosmopolitan cities, inexpensive wine, and awe-inspiring beaches. A couple can thrive in South Africa on $1,850 U.S. per month, while living a contemporary lifestyle that includes eating at nice restaurants, owning a car and vacationing, according to the Expat Forum.
