The Growth Rate & Spread of Canadian Hemlock
- Canadian hemlocks have a slow rate growth that averages less than 12 inches annually. After 20 years of growth Canadian hemlocks can grow up to 22 feet in height. At its maturity, this species reaches heights approaching 105 feet. The root structure of the Canadian hemlock requires at least 28 inches of depth in which to grow.
- The Canadian hemlock produces yellow flowers during midspring that produce an abundant amount of brown seeds. Seeds are produced during the summer and dropped during the fall. Canadian hemlock seeds have a slow spread rate and produce moderately vigorous seedlings.
- Canadian hemlocks can grow using several methods other than spreading seeds. Canadian hemlock may be propagated by bare root, by container and from cuttings.
- The foliage of the Canadian hemlock can spread out from 25 to 35 feet in diameter. It is an evergreen tree that will retain a full spread of foliage year-round and has a generally pyramidal shape.
