Safety Rules on Electricity

    Don't Overload Outlets

    • It's dangerous to put too many plugs into an outlet. Most household extension cords and wall adapters will only allow you to place up to six plugs to an outlet. Do not run one extension cord from another. It's also a bad idea to attempt to put two different extension cords into an outlet, which would allow 12 different electrical appliances to work from the same power source. Follow this safety rule to reduce the risk of power overload and fires due to the wires getting too hot.

    Don't Use Electricity Around Water

    • Avoid using electrical appliances whenever you are around water, such as near the bathroom sink or tub. For instance, blow-dry your hair in a room where there is no water source, just to be safe. If a device comes into contact with water, the water will become charged with electric currents that could be strong enough to cause death. Also, don't ever touch an electrical appliance while you have your hands in water. If it is faulty, you could get shocked.

    Use Three-Pronged Plug

    • Use three-pronged plugs instead of two-pronged ones. The third prong (below the top two) "grounds" the appliance. When a device is grounded, if it fails the circuit will blow out immediately instead of flowing to other places. So, whenever possible, buy appliances that have three prongs and ensure that all of the outlets in your home or business are set up to accept this type of plug.

    Wear Rubber

    • Electricity cannot travel through rubber. So, when you are handling dangerous electrical equipment, especially devices that are potentially faulty or not grounded (no three-pronged plugs), wear strong rubber gloves and rubber-soled shoes. The rubber that you're wearing will prevent the electricity from using your body as a path to the ground.
